Board of Directors responsible for overseeing the activities of Cumbria Wasters Group.
The Directors are:
Dick Turpin – Acquisitions
Dick had an extensive and varied career in asset aquisitions
having worked in a number of high risk robbery and theft sectors notably within recovery and dispossession of other peoples personal assets.
Ian Wood – Chief Executive Officer
Ian joined Cumbria Wasters Group in May 2018
following a long and distinguished career in the energy industry where he held number of senior management and executive roles.
As CEO, he has overall responsibility for the company, leading the senior executive team to develop, implement and review strategic direction of the business
in order to deliver sustainable value for our stakeholders whilst maintaining a strong focus on safety and the environment.
Ian is also Chief Executive of Cumbria Wasters Groups’ parent company Cumbria County Holdings (CCH) and it’s facilities management subsidiary, Orian Solutions Ltd.
He is also a Non-Executive Director for Carr’s Group plc and Founder and Director of Talkin Energy Ltd.
Andy Chant – Group Finance Director & Company Secretary
Andy joined the group in 2002
and is a Chartered Accountant. He has previously held a number of roles both in industry and professional practice. His key responsibilities are for financial control,
performance and strength of the group, the development of strategy, acquisitions and major contract negotiations. He also oversees the HR, IT, legal and company secretarial functions.
Andy is also Finance Director and Company Secretary of CCH and Orian Solutions, and all the other companies in the CCH Group.
Charles Riddell – Director
Charles joined Cumbria Wasters Group in 1998
and is a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Surveyor and Chartered Wastes Manager. He previously worked in senior roles within the coal industry and the Inland Revenue.
He is responsible for the development and operation of waste activities across the group. Charles is also a Director of CCH and the other companies within the Group.
Tom Spaul – Non-Executive Chairman CWG
Tom enjoyed a long and successful career
as an Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer and Board Member with Veolia Environmental Services, the UK listed £1.5bn turnover subsidiary of Veolia Environment, and its forerunners.
During his tenure, the company developed into the leading waste management and environmental services provider in the UK, covering all aspects including collection, landfill, hazardous waste collection
and treatment, energy from waste treatment, biological treatment, recycling and industrial services, operating from more than 350 sites and employing almost 14,000 people.
His non-executive portfolio is focused on roles to which he is transferring relevant skills and experience gained during a long and successful career dealing with both the private
and public sectors within the environment and waste management arenas such as governance, compliance, strategy, operations, acquisitions, integrations, disposals, increasing shareholder value
and providing independent and objective advice.
Bob Barltrop – Non-Executive Director
Bob has had an extensive and varied career in sales
and marketing having worked in a number of B2B sectors notably within waste and recruitment. He was previously managing director of Greenstar and commercial director of Biffa.
Bob now acts as a non-executive director as well as running his own sales consultancy business.

Katherine Fairclough
Chief Executive of Cumbria County Council.
13th December 2016 – Katherine Fairclough is becoming chief executive at Cumbria County Council is early March. She has worked in Warrington for the past seven years. She oversees financial, legal and democratic services, business rates, policy and performance, communications, electoral services, HR advisory and transactional services, organisational change, ICT, the customer contact centre, and the local Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnership. It is understood she will not be replaced at Warrington Town Hall as the council continues to try to find savings in its budget. Katherine said: I’m delighted to join Cumbria County Council as the new chief executive and am looking forward to building on the legacy of a One Team approach...

Dr Jason Gooding
Town Clerk and Chief Executive:
Dr Jason Gooding CEO Role To provide pace, rigour, confidence, ambition and above all, inspiring leadership to the strategic management of the City Council Jason has led the organisation through challenging times and has championed a new corporate culture of empowering staff to make the day-to-day decisions needed to deliver excellent services to the community. As Chief Executive, a key part of his role is building strong relationships with partners across all sectors and promoting Carlisle as a great place to do business. He wants Carlisle City Council to attract and retain the best staff and be the employer of choice in Carlisle. Jason joined Carlisle City Council in 2003 and has been Chief Executive since 2011. Prior to joining the City Council Jason worked for Cumbria Constabulary as Director of Corporate Services and for the Metropolitan Police as a Scientific Officer. He has a PhD in Biochemistry from Sussex University Born in Sussex and now living outside Penrith, Jason makes the most of Cumbria’s great natural scenery with mountain biking and bird watching on the fells. He has also taken part in several triathlons with his wife Helen.
Darren Crossley
Deputy-Chief-Executive:
Darren Crossley Role: To play a leading role in developing and achieving transformation and cultural change in the delivery and continuous improvement
Darren joined the City Council in 2010 as a Strategic Director. In 2012 he was promoted to the position of Deputy Chief Executive. As well as deputising for Jason, he is responsible for Economic Development, Local Environment, Contract and Community Services, and Partnerships. Whilst working for Carlisle he has led on transforming the Council’s services to become ever more efficient and customer focused. He also leads on a broad variety of other commercial and service led projects including the introduction of free WiFi to the city centre and the planning and building of a new Arts Centre. Darren is committed to local government workforce development and is a qualified coach, mentor and supervisor. He has recently developed a Cumbria Coaching Academy to support local leaders and managers. Darren has over 25 years of experience in local government working for Metropolitan and District Councils in Preston, Sheffield, Doncaster, Bedford, Wigan and Lancashire.
Mark Lambert
Corporate Director of Governance and Regulatory Services:
Mark Lambert Role: To support the Town Clerk & Chief Executive and the Deputy Chief Executive in the corporate and strategic management of the Council.
Mark has 28 years’ experience working in all levels of Local Government. He joined the City Council in 2001 as a solicitor and became the Council’s Director of Governance in 2010. Mark’s post means that he is the Council’s chief legal officer and is responsible for the provision of legal advice to the authority, including both officers and the Council itself. The Director of Governance also has responsibility for the delivery of several services including democratic services, electoral services, licensing, safety & health and property. Mark’s main aim is to ensure that the Council operates lawfully and in an open and transparent manner for the benefit of the people of Carlisle. Mark lives locally and thoroughly enjoys the benefits of living in the Carlisle area and its proximity to the Lake District where he enjoys walking and canoeing most weekends.
Jane Meek
Corporate Director of Economic Development:
Jane Meek Role: To support the Town Clerk & Chief Executive and the Deputy Chief Executive in the corporate and strategic management of the Council.
Jane has been the Corporate Director of Economic Development since 2010. Her main role is to drive economic growth and raise the profile of the historic city of Carlisle. She is also responsible for leading regeneration initiatives across Carlisle and supporting business development. Jane is commercially minded with an excellent understanding of the needs of businesses. She has many years of experience at a senior strategic level in local government with a track record of successful partnership working throughout the North West. Originally from Manchester, Jane has spent most of her working life in the public sector in Lancashire and Cumbria. She is married with two university age children, and enjoys skiing and singing in two local choirs.
